What is CPR and what are you doing by pushing on a persons chest?
|
CPR is the process of giving oxygen to a person and helping that oxygen flow through. Lets go ahead and take the words cardio-pulmonary resuscitation apart. The first word is CARDIO. Cardio means heart. When you find somone in cardiac arrest you need to get the blood moving so the oxygen can get to the other parts of the body. Pulomonary means LUNGS. When you give somone a breath it goes through the lungs to little sacs that collect the air for the blood to take it away. These sacs are calles Alveoli. When the air gets to the alveoli little blood vessels collect the gas (Oxygen-- O2) and take them through the Pulmonary Vein back to the heart. Then the heart pumps the oxygenated air to the reast of the body throught the other blood vessels that are there. As you may be able to see, it is a big process to get that Oxygen to the body. That is why you need to pump on the chest. When you give a breath you are causing all of that air to get to the rest of the body!

The Next Few Pages.......
The next few pages will take you step by step for CPR and I will also include some basic first aid care. | REMEMBER that proper training will help you even more than just reading it. There are many organizations that give CPR training. The Fire Department usually has free classes, but you dont get a card. The American Heart Association and the American Red Cross also give classes but there are some minimal costs involved.
